DANCE THERAPY

Children from Buikwe, a place far from the town’s exposure, dance with joy, their faces lighting up with happiness, challenging the stereotype that dance is only for those who “fail.” Upshift Youth Empowerment Initiative harnesses the transformative power of dance to bring hope and opportunity to the children of Buikwe, while also addressing complex social issues, fostering community engagement, and inspiring action.

One participant shared:

Upshift Youth Empowerment Initiative is my happy place because I dance with the hope of becoming something big in the future.””

About this program

Dance and Movement Therapy (DMT) is a creative, body-centered approach to healing and personal growth. It uses movement to help individuals express emotions, reduce stress, build confidence, and foster resilience. Focused on self-expression rather than performance, DMT promotes emotional, mental, and physical well-being offering a safe space for healing and transformation.

“I’ve witnessed children who were once shy and emotionally down blossom into confident individuals, gaining opportunities to grow both locally and internationally through dance,”
Joseph, Founder, Upshift Youth Empowerment Initiative

Our program offers a wide range of creative expressions, including Afrobeats, Hip-hop, traditional African dance, music, and visual arts. We strive to create a supportive environment where children, regardless of their background, can discover and nurture their authentic selves through the power of movement and somatic liberation.

In a community with limited access to dance education, Upshift Youth Empowerment Initiative has become a vital space for children and teens in Buikwe District. Since opening in December 2024, over 40 children have enrolled in our community center. Upshift provides not only a place for connection, fun, and creativity, but also a space for emotional and physical safety.

We look forward to expanding our reach bringing Dance and Movement Therapy to more youth across Buikwe and throughout Uganda’s schools and communities.
